Expansion of no cost services for women
Obama Administration has taken a very vital decision in respect of health care of women. In the recently issued guidelines the Government has made it mandatory on the part of Insurance companies to fully cover women’s birth control and other preventive health care services.
This is a very dynamic and landmark decision in respect of women’s health taken by the Government based on the recommendations of the scientific advisory group in this regard. This new rules clearly admits the backing of the Government to the family planning programs and the health care of women even before their pregnancy.
Now even the contraceptive pills, breast feeding pumps and various kinds of screening would also be freely available to women. As per new rules various kinds of services would now be available to American women without co- pay. The new coverage had included wide range of health matters of women like the screening for gestational diabetes, counseling for HIV and sexually transmitted infections and also the screening for domestic violence.
President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America has very rightly described this landmark decision as a historic victory for women across the country. While giving relief to the women in general the Government has given freedom to religious groups or persons to opt out of it, if they desire. The new rule has ended the controversial debate on the issue of birth control, as opposed by some religious groups.
This new rule is a step forward taken in the line of previous two Supreme Court judgments, one of 1965 which ended the power of the state to ban the use of contraceptives and another judgment of 1972 which recognized the unmarried couple’s right to use of contraceptives.
Under the new rules new insurance companies shall have to pay for the birth control services as well as breastfeeding support to women. It is argued that if very large number of women could breast feed their babies for first six months; it would save lives of thousands of infants and would save to the extent of $13 billion each year for the health care system.
It was observed that women are generally earning less than men and also suffering and requiring more of the preventive services. The costly services had earlier made them to forgo such preventive services.  However this new amendment would help a lot to the women to come forward and get maximum benefit of preventive care services.
